How iThenticate works

The status of the upload is tracked within the report column of the folder inbox.

Documents normally take between 5-10 minutes to generate an Originality Report.

Very large files may take longer to generate a report.

The file may not exceed 400 pages or 40 MB.

Result example:

Interpretation of Similarity Index
  • It reports on the total amount of matching texts
  • It colour highlights and groups with the source where it came from
  • Looks at the total % for individual similarities
  • A single similarity of <5% is good
  • For example, if total is 37% but each individual % is 1 and <1, it’s good
  • If one similarity however has a high % (5+)  that will be a red flag, and would need to be addressed
  • Exclude references and direct quotes
  • If folder is too big, recipient can be added to the iThenticate account to access their folder only

Receiving the report

Analyse iThenticate’s match overview, and edit accordingly

  • Not all matches are meaningful (common sentences /knowledge will be picked up)
  • Re-submit, it can happen that the % goes up
Dealing with a high % in the similarity report
  • Check in with your Information Consultant
  • Paraphrase (putting the information and ideas you have learned into your words)
  • Provide Proper In text Citation (using citation styles e.g. APA, Chicago, Harvard)
  • Provide References (make sure your references are accurate to avoid misleading references)
  • Quote Sources (use quotation marks followed by a citation in brackets)
  • Break up sentences
  • Authenticate Sources before using them (is the author reputable, information credible, check outdated publications, source accuracy)
  • Allow ample time to fix all issues
