Plan outputs and publication: determine where to publish (data and research Outputs)

Outputs are important!

HSRC Research Outputs, the intellectual property of the HSRC, is managed by the research outputs function within the eResearch Knowledge Centre, namely Digital Scholarship Services. This service ensures the efficient provision of research output information by accurately capturing the publications of HSRC researchers and operational staff and disseminating it through various platforms. Electronic copies are also stored for further use and preservation.  Various reporting activities, throughout the financial year, make use of the information in the Research Outputs module, such as the Annual Report and LeaPPT+S reports. The HSRC intranet, HSRC website and the HSRC Research Output Repository, are populated with the research outputs collection showcasing the HSRC’s research globally.

What is a research output?

Research outputs are the primary means of communicating the results of academic inquiry. Research outputs such as data, books, journal articles and other scholarly publications are a tangible result of research.

Types of Research Outputs

  • A journal article
  • A monograph (book)
  • A chapter in a book
  • A seminar/conference paper
  • A client or research report
  • Newspaper article
  • A review in a journal
  • MP 4 video
  • Pamphlets
  • And many more ...

The HSRC recognizes all types of outputs but gives preference to publications for reporting purposes.

The difference between accredited and peer-reviewed journal articles is important when you plan where to publish your research findings.
