Indicator 1.1: Accredited journal articles
Journal articles - recognised internationally and by the Department of Higher Education and Training (ISI, IBSS, DHET (SA), SciELO SA, Norwegian list, Scopus and DOAJ) - will contribute to this indicator. Articles must have one author appointed on “Researcher” level or above, to be counted. (Interns/trainees are excluded if appointed at that level). Editorials and book reviews do not count.
Please note: The HSRC affiliation must be indicated for the article to count. If not, a letter from the research division is acquired as evidence.
Indicator 1.2: Accredited journal articles – African collaborator
Any internationally and DHET recognised journal article (ISI/IBSS/SA/SciELO SA/Norwegian list/SCOPUS and DOAJ) with at least one African (other than SA) author can contribute to this indicator. The author affiliations are captured in the RMS as mentioned in the journal article.
Please note: The HSRC affiliation must be indicated for the article to count. If not, a letter from the research division is acquired as evidence.
Indicator 1.3: Peer-reviewed/scholarly books
Researchers at all levels can contribute to this indicator. For a scholarly book to be counted, it must be a published book of at least 60 pages and have an ISBN number. The book must be peer-reviewed prior to publication. Supporting evidence of the review process, provided in the book or obtained from the publisher in the form of a letter, must accompany the submission of the output to the RMS.
Indicator 1.4: Peer-reviewed/scholarly book chapters
Researchers at all levels are included to contribute to this indicator. For a chapter in a scholarly book to be counted, the book must have been published and have an ISBN number. The book must also be peer-reviewed prior to publication. Supporting evidence of the review process, provided in the book or obtained from the publisher in the form of a letter, must accompany the submission of the output.
Indicator 1.5: Accredited journal articles with multiple citations
Number of accredited journal articles with at least 10 citations listed within 5 years of publication. Scopus will be used to track these citations.
Indicator 1.6: Curated Datasets downloaded for secondary use
The number of instances where HSRC-curated datasets are downloaded for secondary use via the HSRC’s research data platform during the period under review.
Indicator 2.1(a): Policy Briefs completed and published
Policy briefs are short papers that convey policy issues and outline courses of action to resolve them. This indicator requires the number of policy briefs with at least one HSRC staff member serving as the author or co-author, published by the HSRC during the period under review.
Please note: The policy brief can only count if it was published by the HSRC Press. If it is not, it can still be counted but only with written permission from the DCEO:Research.
