A world of journal article versions |
Understanding the differences and which versions are acceptable for the HSRC’s performance information and the Research Output Repository: LeaPPT+S Indicator 1.1 and 1.2
Definitions:
1. Author's Original Manuscript (AOM)/Preprint
The version of the article before peer review or editing, as submitted by an author to the journal.
These versions can also be referred to as "submitted manuscript" or "submitted version” or “preprint“.
2. Accepted Manuscript/Postprint
The author’s final version, after the peer-review changes are implemented, but before the publisher’s formatting.
These versions can also be referred to as "accepted manuscript" or "final accepted version“.
This version might also include the publisher’s version or an online version where the final publication details such as the volume, issue number and issue number and page numbers are not yet available.
3. Version of Record
The final published version as it appears in the journal. This version includes any post-publication corrections or enhancements or other changes made by the publisher or its licensors.
Preprints are NOT acceptable for the performance information audit!
In the case where preprints are registered for curation, they are usually sent back and will stand over until such time that the postprint or publisher’s version becomes available.
Online or publishers versions or postprints ARE accepted for inclusion in LeaPPT+S and the citation appears thus: Petersen, I., Kruss, G. & Van Rheede, N. (2022) Strengthening the university third mission through building community capabilities alongside university capabilities. Science and Public Policy. July:Online. |
The research output repository is retrospectively updated every year with outstanding metadata not available at the time of inclusion in the performance information. The citation of a final publisher version or when the record is updated appears thus: Musara, M., Niyimbanira, F. & Madzivhandila, T.S. (2022) Towards the entrepreneurial municipality: a proposed framework for service delivery improvement in South Africa. Journal of Public Administration. 57(1):87-105. |
For LeaPPT+S - journal article versions can be counted ONLY once.
When an updated version appears, it can, unfortunately, NOT be counted a second time. Only the volume, issue and page numbers will be updated in the repository. The LeaPPT+S date never changes.
